In cooperation with the mining authorities of the federal states BGR is publishing the "Map of Mining and Storage Operations of the Federal Republic of Germany" on a scale of 1 : 2 000 000. It shows the locations of mining operations for coal, lignite, petroleum, natural gas, sand and gravel, iron and manganese ore and salt.

It was one of the most important collieries in Europe and by the Second World War it had an output of about 3.6 million tons.
